An accused may present character evidence under MRE 404(a)(1) to demonstrate that his good military character raises a reasonable doubt about whether he committed the crime charged.
Good soldier evidence in an Article 120 case is limited to reputation and opinion (no specific instances of conduct). MRE 405(a). “Good Soldier” evidence includes battlefield performance, dependability, leadership and initiative, performance and proficiency, and promptness.15 See Combined Deskbook, Volume 1 – Tab F – Defenses; United States v.
