A former Navy commanding officer from Green Bay has reportedly plead not guilty for his role in a collision that killed seven sailors.

According to the Navy Times, Commander Bryce Benson was in charge of the destroyer Fitzgerald in June 2017. During the collision off the coast of Japan, Benson was reportedly asleep and thrown out of his quarters, causing him to suffer a traumatic brain injury.

Benson is charged with dereliction of duty and neglect resulting in death, along with negligence in the improper handling of a vessel.

According to the presiding judge, Benson’s general court-martial is scheduled to begin in January 28, 2019.
