Located in the Towns of Newport and Middletown, Rhode Island, the Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA Newport) houses the Naval Justice School and the Naval War College. The Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic (COMCRUDESLANT) once resided here. Now, the pier facilities hold inactive ships together with the United States Coast Guard. In the Base Realignment and Closure in 2005, NAVSTA Newport obtained over five hundred billets in addition to receiving again, the Officer Candidate School (OCS), the Naval Supply Corps School and several other activities.
The Naval War College (NWC) was hailed as the “Home of Thought” for the United States Navy. Educating and developing leaders, supporting the future maritime Navy and associated roles and missions, promoting combat readiness and strengthening global maritime partnerships are the main objectives of this institute. Rear Admiral Walter E. Carter, a graduate of the US Naval Academy, is the current president of this institution.
