The Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (MCAS Yuma) is situated in a vast, 3000-acres of flat desert and wilderness just 3 kilometers outside the city of Yuma, Arizona. MCAS Yuma (ICAO: KNYL, FAA LID: NYL) is a home to the troops of AV-8B Harrier IIs of the Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401) and the MAWTS-1 or the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1.
The area that MCAS Yuma occupies used to be a civilian airport, before being transformed into the Yuma Army Field during the World War II. Construction began from June of 1942 and was finished and ready for use by December of that year. Since then, the field has served numerous purposes for Marine Corps’ use and is being maintained by joint civilian and military efforts.
MCAS Yuma is also tagged as the busiest air station owned by the Marine Corps with its year-round flying offers and thousands of acres of open terrain that can be used for various air-to-ground military operations. Since November 2012, it has also served as a host to the latest F-35B variant of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.
