Overview-The indigenous history of Clovis

The small city derives its name from the ancient culture of Clovis, NM that existed from the time of the Native Americans who resided in the area over the decades. The place also carries great historical significance with archeological digs in the surrounding areas revealing the presence of several burial sites used by the Native Americans.
The origin of the civilization of the area mainly emerged as a result of expansion operations that were carried out by the railway companies in the early 1900’s when the Topeka and Santa Fe railway began to look for a location to form a town to act as a switch way for the trains making their way through the area which gave the first name of the place as ‘Riley’s Switch’.
This later was annexed into the BNSF railway network in the modern times while also serving as a home to the Cannon air force base which rests near the town.

Canon AFB Military details

Clovis Nm Military DefenseApart from just holding a historical significance and railway operations hub, the city of Clovis, NM is also home to the Canon Air force base which rests at the outskirts of the town. Established in 1942, the base comes under the command of the AFSOC and boasts the usage of a wide array of special jets and drones as well. The current establishment of the base holds the specialized jets and also a total of 2,245 soldiers who reside in the base to carry out the exercises and operations that are carried out as per the schedule imposed by the head of the Canon’s base.

The base traces its roots back to the distinguished General John K Cannon who held major command positions in the strike missions during the Second World War. The base and its occupants at that time were involved in the invasion of Southern Europe during the war as well headed by General Canon.

The modern times see the base has now shifted from normal operations after a BRACS committee hearing which has since changed the status of the base into a special operations base which replaced the Hurlburt field base in Florida with all the specialized covert operations aircraft being moved to Canon’s Air Force Base.
