Fort Gordon, Georgia

Camp Gordon, or Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, dates back to 1917 and is known for training soldiers and contributing to the intelligence capabilities of the American war effort. The camp was activated during World War II for infantry and tank training. From the 1950s the camp has been the centre of several training facilities, including military and government training for the Army, the Army Criminal Laboratory, the 51st Airborne Artillery Brigade and Army Signal Officer Candidate School.

Army Disciplinary Barracks for Convicted Criminals was at Camp Gordon from early 1946 to June 1947 before being deactivated as planned. During this time, Fort Gordon became home to the Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, a rehabilitation center and disciplinary barracks.

After World War II, the demand to close Camp Gordon forced the return of the newly established Signal Corps Training Center in 1948 and the Military Police School in 1948. Fort Gordon trained infantry and signal soldiers as well as military policemen deployed in the Vietnam War. During the war, the camp served as a training facility for the military police corps, and the area of the Brem barracks was used for the training of radio carriers until the 1980s.

In 1974, the Army moved from Fort Monmouth, N.J., to Fort Gordon its main signal training centre to consolidate signal training at one location. The first facility at Fort Benning military base was inaugurated in June 2016. Construction of the third facility on the Fort Stewart Military Base in Savannah began in May 2015 and was completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, commissioned a 30 MW AC photovoltaic power plant in November 2016 at the Fort Gordon Military facility near Augusta, Georgia, USA, in November 2016. The facility was developed through a joint collaboration between Southern and the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives (EU initiative), a working group of the US. General Services Administration (GSA ). In May 2014, Georgia Power submitted to Georgia Public Service Commission the Georgia Power Plan to develop three 30 MW alternative solar projects under the 2007 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in partnership with the US Army and the U.S. GSA. The combined output of the three solar plants, known as Georgia 3-30, will account for 18% of US Armys “energy consumption in Georgia.

Since June 1985, the fortress has been home to the US Signal Corps, a branch of the US Army responsible for providing and maintaining information systems and communications networks. Fort Gordon has been home since June 1986 to the Signal Corps Regiment of the United States Army Signal Corps.

The US Signal Corps, the US Army division responsible for the provision and maintenance of information systems and communications networks, has a training center whose primary function is to provide specialized training to Signal Corps military and civilian personnel. The main task of the base is to individually train the Signal Corps of the US Army in military professional fields. The brigade is also responsible for training other troops, primarily signal and ordnance soldiers.

Fort Gordon  is a US Army facility established in October 1941. The facility is named after John Brown Gordon, a major General of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. It played its first active role during the First World War. The camp was named after Gordon, who was a businessman, Confederate Army and U.S. Senate.

During the first years of the camp, it was not as popular in the area as many of the other forts that were opened in different parts of Georgia.

Fort Gordon was rebuilt in July 1941 and served as training base for several divisions of the army, including the 4th and 26th infantry divisions and the 10th armoured division, which were transferred under General George S. Patton to Europe. Soldiers who perform signals, cyber and similar tasks are high demand throughout the army and Fort Gordon has a steady stream of soldiers trained for these duties on the base. For example, soldiers at Fort Gordon training in areas of great importance for warfare before the emergence of Army Computer School in the 1980’s and soldiers in southwest Asia deployed during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
