Two Nigerian Air Force personnel, Lance Corporal Josiah Yisa and Aircraftman Johnson Hunton, have been court-martialled for allegedly assaulting a civilian in a video which went viral on Saturday.
Our correspondent learnt that the two airmen were tried in Monday. But the outcome of the proceedings had yet to be released as of the time of filing this report.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, confirmed the trial of the airmen.
Daramola on Saturday via his Twitter handle said the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, had ordered a disciplinary action against the personnel, who were caught assaulting a civilian on Friday.
“The airmen were part of an FCT Joint Task Team conducting patrols around locations in Abuja on Friday when they allegedly observed the victim snatching a lady’s purse. They claimed that it was during the process of enforcing his arrest that they inadvertently assaulted him.
“They acted illegally, regardless of the victim’s alleged offence. Pursuant to the air force’s zero tolerance for human rights violations and sequel to preliminary investigations, they have been charged. They will be tried and punished accordingly if found guilty.”
