Geography

History

The city of Norfolk was at first a part of the Elizabeth Cittie jurisdiction. In 1634 the land was reorganized into a shire system, after which Elizabeth Cittie was renamed Elizabeth City Shire. It was Adam Thoroughgood who suggested the name New Norfolk County for the newly-separated portion of South Hampton Roads. During the 17th century, Norfolk occupied a total of 50 acres of land, and was finally incorporated in the year 1705. The whole area was burned down as a result of the Revolutionary War battles, after which the inhabitants had to struggle to rebuild their settlement. Many families simply moved away, and Norfolk was left underpopulated. After the introduction of the railroad system in the area, the city flourished once again, and even expanded its grounds. Nowadays the government is once again struggling to revitalize the urban center of the town.

Industry

As the center of the Hampton Roads area, the city of Norfolk serves as a commercial and cultural hub. The largest employer in the area is undoubtedly the military, which has several large installations posted around the city.
