Philadelphia – History, Tourist Attractions and City life

William Penn is credited as the founder of the city and this city came into existence in 1682. The city has its own place in the US history, as it played an important role in the American Civil War and was supposedly the meeting place of the founding fathers of the United States. The initial construction of the city was with the intent of making it the capital of PA colony. Interestingly, Philadelphia served as a temporary capital of the US while Washington DC was being built. The original inhabitants of the city were the tribal Indians or the Lenape Indians. The European influx and influence started in the early 17th century when the European settlers of Dutch and Swedish origin settled here.

The early European settlers tried to assert their influence by establishing their own colonies in the region which saw the building of many forts; like Fort Nassau, Fort Christina, Fort Beversreede, Fort Nya Korsholm etc. These small groups fought among themselves and they had their own militias. Later the area was conquered by the English, but the situation of the area improved and was united as one when William Penn was granted a charter for the city. William Penn was a man ahead of his times, he established a city where people could freely express their religion and tolerant values were highly cherished. This deeply helped in fostering good relations with the local Indian tribal people as well.

Situated in Delaware Valley, it is also the economic and cultural center of the state. 19th century saw it become a railroad hub and major industrial center. European settlers further contributed to the economic strength of the city. A wide variety of businesses and industries cropped with diverse populations settling in the area. Textile industry was the biggest among all the industries here. The history paints a lurid picture of the city, with the city having a fair share of its ups and downs. It went from a city of industrial strength to a corrupt city. It witnessed shameful incidences of ethnic rioting as well, when the whites and the blacks of the city openly clashed with each other. The involvement of police force in illegal activities was another low point of the city in the early 1920s. The economy suffered a jolt 1960 with most of its manufacturing jobs moving to lower taxed regions and overseas. The government resources and city’s tax base was considerably reduced when many companies moved out of Philadelphia. The city almost went bankrupt in the 1980s. The city has seen revival since then and is holding its own pretty well.

The city climate is reasonably moderate with a few months showing extreme sides. The summers can be quite hot with temperatures exceeding 30C during the hotter months. Mostly, the summer temperature is moderate in mid 20s Centigrade. The winters are on the cooler side, many days see a high temperature of 10C which is quite pleasant for winters. There cold days as well, the temperature during these days plummets to about -12C. The region experiences snowfall as well, which can be harsh at times.

These places are a part of National Historic Park. The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence was signed here in these places.
